Hello Lettering Lovies! I hope everyone is hanging in there wherever you are! These are unprecedented times we are living in right now, and I hope all of you are safe and healthy.  I for one am taking this time to be extra creative, and I hope you get that opportunity to as well!

Today I wanted to share a tutorial that is really easy and fun to do with the kids! I know many of you have children home and are looking for fun, creative projects to do with them. And since Easter is right around the corner, it’s a great time to decorate some eggs! (Hopefully you can find some… there is a shortage in Utah along with toilet paper!)

I had the opportunity to use the new Kelly Creates Watercolor Inks from her Watercolor Lettering line. The colors are so vibrant; they are perfect for projects like this.  There are 3 sets: Set 1 has 5 ‘warm’ colors, Set 2 has 5 ‘cool’ colors, and Set 3 has Black, White, and Iridescent. I love them all, and the iridescent ink is so sparkly.

Now, you can hard boil real eggs and use those, but I wanted my eggs to last year after year. I found these DIY eggs at a local store (Wal-Mart) for under $2. Super affordable. They are lightweight and perfect for decorating and little fingers.  They have a matte finish, so they take the paint very well.

There are a few ways you can add paints to the eggs. The first technique is to use the Kelly Creates Palette and her brushes and paint the eggs. There are no specific rules to how to paint, just go for it!

This is a great opportunity to teach little ones how to mix colors to make other colors! They will never know you just snuck an art class in. The results of this are a little more muted, and give you beautiful Easter pastel colors.

Here are some of the eggs I did using this technique.  I used the egg tray that the eggs came in to allow them to dry and to paint the tops where my fingers were! This is helpful for little fingers!

The next technique was my favorite, and I felt like the watercolors were more vibrant. For this you will need plastic cling wrap cut into squares, along with the palette and pipettes.

I started by laying the cling wrap on a flat surface. I made sure that my squares were large enough to wrap around the egg completely, but I didn’t measure them. I then dripped 1 drop of colors all around the cling wrap.

This is where you become a color mixologist, so just have fun with the watercolors you choose! Now, you can experiment to get different results. On some of them after I was done adding the color droplets, I would use the pipette to add a few drops of water as well from the palette.

Sometimes I added 3 colors, sometimes I added 6 colors. I also tried just warm colors and just cool colors…. This is when you can be creative and there is no wrong way to do it! Add water, leave the water out…experiment and play!

Then, lay the egg in the center of the cling wrap.  Pick the wrap up from each side and wrap it around the egg, being careful to wrap it all the way around and don’t leave a corner down. This will allow the watercolor to drip out! (Don’t worry, it cleans up really nicely… ask me how I know! Haha!)

Rub gently on areas that are not covered with color, the watercolors move quite easily and blend to make even more colors while covering the egg. Try not to over mix and end up with brown eggs.

Next, take the egg out of the plastic wrap and allow to dry. You can place them on the egg carton or a clean piece of plastic wrap on your counter. Maybe you have a craft mat too. I used the carton they came in to let them dry.  They also made some fun designs while they dried and the color moved a little!

One other technique I did which I think was my favorite, because I love a little shimmer, I added a few drops of the iridescent watercolor ink to the cling wrap before I wrapped the egg! This gave the eggs a really gorgeous shimmer. This did take a little longer to dry, so let these dry overnight before handling.

I might have gone back to the store and bought another carton of DIY eggs to play with. This is a relatively not-so-messy way to colour eggs, and once I got going, I couldn’t stop. I didn’t feel guilty since they weren’t real eggs, and the limit wasn’t two per customer!

Adorable Easter decor with watercolor technique and free cut file www.KellyCreates.caYou are going to love the results you get with these techniques, and since you might want to give these beauties as gifts or use them on your Easter dinner table, we are also including a free SVG and PDF for these cute egg holders that make these totally giftable!

If you have an electronic cutting machine, use the SVG. This will work with the Silhouette, Cricut and Scan and Cut Machines. Just cut them out of a 12 x12 piece of cardstock. CLICK HERE for the SVG Cut File. (in DropBox)

The next step is to assemble. Super simple to put together: you will need liquid glue, a hole punch and some ribbon or baker’s twine.

Here is how the base goes together. Fold on the score lines.

Add a small dab of glue to the tabs and assemble all 4 sides. The base is complete!

Next, place the base in the holder and punch two small holes at the top to add ribbon or twine to hold it closed.

I created a name tag from the silky smooth white card stock in the Kelly Creates Project pad using the Kelly Creates Multicolor small Brush Pens and tied it to the top of the holder with the twine in a bow. Just add your decorated egg, and you are done! These are ready for baskets, your dinner table, neighbor gifts and more.

Adorable Easter decor with watercolor technique and free cut file www.KellyCreates.caI also used the cute bunnies that were cut from the card stock to make simple egg holders for the table. I added a small felt ball as the bunny tail (pompom would work too), and cut a 1” strip of cardstock and glued the base to create another egg holder option. These remind me of the ones that came in kits when I was a kid.  I glued the bunny to the strip and made a cute second option for displaying my eggs.

Don’t forget, once your eggs are dry, you can also personalize them for your egg hunts with names! I used the Kelly Creates Small Brush Pen in Midnight and the Moonlight Marker.
