Erica @ericalligraphy2 has a ‘yummy’ tutorial for us today….a hand lettered recipe book! She used the Kelly Creates Peace Journal and is sharing a printable dessert recipe for you too! Love this idea!
Kelly Creates Supplies: Peace Journal, Sticker Book, Black Fineliners, Multicolor Bullet Tip Pens, Multicolor Small Brush pens, Dream pens Set 2, Deluxe Lettering Kit (ruler pencil), Multicolor Fineliners
I’ve been thinking about doing this tutorial for some time. And because I’ve seen several articles and projects around handwritten recipes over the last couple of months, it feels like the perfect time to transform Kelly’s Peace Journal into a hand lettered recipe book.
There is a sudden resurgence in interest of handwritten recipes. Families are passing them down as heirlooms. People are creating wallpaper out of them. I even had fabric created with my great-grandma’s recipes so I could make an apron for my grandma several years ago after seeing a recipe tea towel project on Pinterest.
One reason I really love this project is because I adore the Kelly Creates Peace Journal, but journaling is not something I do much of. This repurpose gives me a great reason to use it! And despite not journaling or planning, I wanted to draw inspiration from that “style” instead of just writing the recipe.
Start by removing all the printed pages (i.e., calendar, pages with preprinted words or designs) so that only the blank dotted pages remain. You can use the pages you take out for other journaling projects.
Add the name of the recipe at the top using the Kelly Creates Black Fine Brush Pen (or other color Kelly Creates pen). Because this is a Peach Custard Dessert recipe, let’s add a simple drawing of a peach using the Kelly Creates Sunset Bullet Tip pen, Kelly Creates Black 08 Fineliner and Kelly Creates Sage Multicolor Small Brush pen.
Next, create a grid using your Kelly Creates Black 08 Fineliner and ruler from the Kelly Creates Deluxe Lettering Kit.
Letter the ingredients and instructions using the Kelly Creates Sunset Bullet Marker and Kelly Creates Sunset Fineliner in the grid. I added a couple extra notes below the grid.
Now, let’s make the divider pages for the book.
Write the name of the section on a blank journal sheet. In this case, I’m writing “Dessert” using the Kelly Creates Nest Dream Pen. Add some shadows using the Kelly Creates Black Fine Brush Pen.
Use the square stickers from the Kelly Creates Sticker Collection to create tabs. For each section, stagger the tabs from top to bottom. You can make as many or few sections of your recipe book as you want/need.
To create the tab, place the edge of the sticker on the sheet. I used the bottom dotted line as my guide. Then fold the sticker over and stick the other edge to the back of the page. Using the Kelly Creates Black 01 Fineliner, write the name of the section on the tab.
Add your sheets back to the Kelly Creates Peace Journal and get cooking!
Here is my “Peach Custard Dessert” recipe and printable practice sheet! Click the image below to download and print. You can even trace over the title with your Kelly Creates brush pen to practice….enjoy!
