Make Your Own Father’s Day Card

Hello Lettering Friends! June is here and that means Father’s Day in the States! I really hate buying greeting cards, so I try to make them any chance I get. This holiday is no exception! I love to create them, and I know the recipient appreciates a handmade card as well.

 If you remember from last year, I created a punny Father’s Day card with a Bomb Pop Popsicle! This year, I wanted to carry on the tradition of a punny card, but with popcorn. I sure do love a good card with a pun.

I gathered a few supplies and started with the base using Kelly’s watercolor paper.

I sketched a bag of popcorn.  I always sketch out what is in my head before diving into color, so I can make changes until I am happy with the look. You can use Kelly Creates Grid or Dotted paper for sketching your ideas. 

I added the word ‘POP’ to mimic a theatre marquee sign, and then hand lettered the rest of the sentiment.

Once I was happy with how it looked, I started to paint with Kelly Creates Watercolor Inks. I started coloring the bag first and used Kelly’s Poppy watercolor and a #2 brush and I kept it very pigmented. This means I didn’t dilute the ink in my palette with a lot of water. I love how pigmented Kelly’s watercolor inks are because you can achieve so many different color variants just by adding water.

Popcorn bags are typically red and white, but you can really adjust the color to match any theme.

Once the bag is done, I used Kelly’s Deep Yellow watercolor ink to paint the popcorn. I leave erasing the pencil lines until the end when I know watercolor inks are dry. Again, keeping the color pigmented, I painted one side of the piece of popcorn, then blended out with a little water. Popcorn is usually a few different shades of yellow, and I wanted to mimic that on my card.

See how the watercolor is dark then fades lighter? That is the look I wanted.

I staggered painting the popcorn kernels so they had time to dry before painting ones right next to each other to avoid bleeding. I also went back and added more watercolor ink to some to have more color variations.

Adding more yellow watercolor made me think of butter on the popcorn, which is appropriate for the play on words in the sentiment!

I let that dry and moved on to the sentiment. I outlined the word “POP” with a Kelly Creates Black Fineliner 03 and used a Black Fine Brush Tip pen for the “than you.”

Once my popcorn was dry, I went back in with my #2 lettering brush and White Watercolor Ink (Set 3) to highlight each piece. This just gives the appearance of light hitting each piece and adds a little dimension. I did have to go over them a few times.

Next, I painted the word ‘POP’ with the Poppy Watercolor Ink. Again, I didn’t dilute the ink to achieve the rich red color. I was careful not to paint where the small white circle “lights” would be in each letter.

Then I used the Black Small Brush Tip Pen to finish the sentiment.

Once everything is dry, erase all the pencil lines you can see. I always start light to make sure that I don’t smudge any color, then go back in where I need to clean up the pencil lines a little better. I also added some outlines using the black 03 Fineliner to the bag and popcorn.

Lastly, I added some long triangle shapes to each side of the word “POP” to add dynamic energy to the lettering. I painted them in the same way I did the popcorn, and outlined them as well. One thing I love about Kelly’s Black Fineliners is they do not bleed – they are waterproof and fast drying. So whether you outline first then watercolor over, or outline over watercolor, there is no bleeding!

And you know I love adding colorful paper and yum yums to my cards, so I trimmed the watercolor paper, matted it with red cardstock and added it to the yellow folded card base. I put some baker’s twine on it, tied a bow and love the way it came together!
