A good white pen is like the unicorn in the lettering world. They don’t really exist, and when you do find a nice one, it often will skip or draw poorly. Why? The formula for opaque white ink is nearly impossible to perfect.
I probably have tried every white pen on the market, and I use 2 ‘gel’ white ink pens with good results: the Sakura Gelly Roll (in the bold point 10) and the Uniball Signo (in the broad point). I prefer the largest point size in each of these white pens because I want bold, visible lines, and these larger points lay down more ink.
Using this white pen to shadow and accent metallic lettering on black paper adds a WOW factor and more dimension. You can draw shadow lines beside the metallic lettering and you can also write on top of the Kelly Creates Jewel Pen ink to create beautiful designs.
The Kelly Creates Jewel Pens come in 2 sizes: Large and small. Both sets have 8 colours.
I used the large Jewel Brush Pens for this ‘Fall’ lettering and also for drawing the metallic leaves.
The Kelly Creates black paper pad is perfect for the metallic Jewel brush pens and white pens, but you could also use smooth black card stock.
You might be wondering about the my brand of white brush pen, the Kelly Creates white Moonlight Marker. I love this brush pen, and it’s really unique in the lettering world. However, the effect on black paper is more of a ‘white chalk’ appearance. It’s very different from an opaque white gel pen. The “Time for Pie” design below by Bonnie Peters is stunning, and she achieved varying opacity with the Moonlight marker by layering it to draw the pumpkins.
Here is a video tutorial on my YouTube channel where I demo lettering with the metallic Jewel brush pens and the Uniball Signo white pen. Give these pens a try! I think you’ll love them!
