Hi everyone! Bonnie here, and I’m excited to show you a simple, hand drawn alphabet that you can customize in a variety of ways.

Although there are 4 different illustrations above, once you see how one alphabet can be broken down into small, doable steps, you can go on to create styles unique to your own projects and occasions.

Using the Kelly Creates grid paper and drawing pencil (from the Deluxe Lettering Kit), I drew out a simple alphabet. You’ll notice that I only drew letters that are similar in shape (B,P,R) ( C,G,O,Q) (E,F) and V,W). This helps me keep the forms consistent and saves time. Why draw more than you have to? If you prefer, you can definitely draw the entire exemplar A – Z.

I even drew some small circles, where I might later add in the illustration. TIP:  If you don’t want to doodle or illustrate, then use one of Kelly Creates Floral Stamps.

Using a light box, I placed a piece of Kelly Creates paper from the Blank Paper Pad on top of my drafted grid sample, and lightly pencil traced a clean set of letters A-Z. TIP: You can also hold the two pieces of layered paper on a window with removable tape if you don’t have a light box.

Once again I added small circles where I might want to draw the illustrations next.

When you know what word/words you are drawing, that will determine where you place each illustration so they don’t overlap or bump into each other.

Using a Kelly Creates 005 fineliner I drew in some tiny illustrations. You can copy mine or come up with your own ideas. TIP: These are suitable for the holiday season but change up to hearts or flowers etc for other special occasions. You don’t have to be an artist to doodle little details like this.

Top row – holly

Second row – trees

Third row – blooms

Fourth row – stars

Using the same Kelly Creates 005 Fineliner, I drew in my lines of the letters.

I drew three lines for the thick side and a single line for the narrow side of each letter. (Same principle as for brush lettering, thin up, thick down. So the three lines represent where you’d do a downstroke and a single line represents an upstroke.)

I stopped the lines just short of touching the illustrations.

While I did my alphabet letters in black, feel free to use a colour of choice when creating your own piece. There are lots of wonderful colours available in Kelly Creates Multicolor Fineliners and Bullet Tip Pens.

Next you can add colour to the illustrations. Think about complementary colours, or where you may be using this style in a finished, lettered piece, to decide on your own pleasing palette.

I used a variety of Dream Pens (Cardinal, Jungle, Stream, Bark, Daybreak and Sunshine),  and a Kelly Creates Multicolor Bullet Tip Pen “Palm.”

On my finished pieces below, I also used the Kelly Creates ‘Storm’ Dream Pen for shadowing and a variety of Kelly Creates Black Brush Pens.

Beautiful, Bonnie! I love the holly and berries! Maybe I’ll try this on my Christmas Envelopes, as I am most steady with block letters!
