Are you looking for a little Halloween lettering inspiration? Try out my fun and easy spider web lettering tutorial to decorate cards, planners, scrapbook layouts or make some spooky decor for your home! Feel free to use whichever Halloween words or phrases you’d like for the center of your web.
I like to start by sketching my project in pencil as a rough draft on the Kelly Creates Practice Pad. I’m using the Kelly Creates Dotted Paper pad here. This way you can test out your spacing and lettering before inking your final design. TIP: If you have a light pad, you can then trace your design onto your final Kelly Creates Project Pad paper.
To start your design, you’re going to use a bowl, plate or circle template to draw a circle on your paper in pencil.
Next you’re going to letter your word in the middle of the circle with your Kelly Creates Dream Pen. In this example, I’m lettering the word “Beware” with my Kelly Creates ‘Midnight’ Dream Pen. TIP: You can use pencil first to write the word and then letter on top.
Once you’ve lettered your word, you will pencil in the lines that will make up the foundation of your spider web. Start by drawing a line from the top of the circle to the bottom, dividing your circle in half. Then you will draw another line from the left of the circle to the right, so now you have ‘4 quarters’. Make sure you stop your lines before and after your words. Then you’re going to draw additional diagonal lines as shown until you have 15-16 lines or spokes radiating from the centre of the circle. TIP: You can slightly curve these radiating lines for more dimension.
Next, you will use your Kelly Creates 08 Black Fineliner to ink in your web’s spoke lines.
Then you’re going to make your web. Start at the top and connect the spokes with curved U shaped lines with your Kelly Creates Black Fineliner. Continue all around the edge of the circle. Once you have the first row finished, you will continue the pattern repeatedly until you reach your letters. TIP: You can draw these lines closer together as you move towards the centre of the web.
When you reach any ascending or descending letters, you will create a small gap and continue your U shape around it.
Stop drawing the web when you reach your letters. Fill in any gaps in the web as needed.
Once the ink is dried, you will erase all your pencil marks, including your initial circle. After erasing, I like to go back over the spokes with my Fineliner to darken them and make them stand out. This is optional, and if you feel your hand isn’t steady to do so, then just leave as is.
Next we’re going to make a color version. For this, you will use your Kelly Creates Dream Pens for the lettering and Kelly Creates Multicolor Fineliners for the web. I’m going to letter “Hocus Pocus” with my Sunset and Lilac Dream Pens and make the web purple with my Kelly Creates Lilac Multicolor Fineliner. TIP: You could also use the Kelly Creates Multicolor Bullet tip pens instead of the Fineliners.
You will follow the same steps as above to create your web except this time draw the web with the Kelly Creates Multicolor Fineliner. I also decided to add an outline to the words with my Kelly Creates Black Fineliner to make them pop.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this cute spooky web tutorial! If you try it out, use hashtag #kellycreates so we can see what you’ve created!
