Bonnie Peters (@diamondandwillow) is joining us today with a lovely tutorial on drawing simple vases and adding botanicals with stunning results.
Kelly Creates Supplies: Black Fineliners, Deluxe Lettering Kit (pencil, eraser), Blank Paper Pad
I’ve created a simple set of hand drawn vases for you to practice drawing, with the idea of letting you finish them off any way you please. I’m just giving you a starting point for you to let your imagination run wild.
While I’m using the Kelly Creates black fineliners for the ones shown here, you can change that up too with Kelly Creates Multicolor fineliners or you can also get more detailed in the shapes or reflections as shown in this photo above.
To begin I sketched out the vase shapes in pencil first on the Kelly Creates Blank Paper Pad.
Once I was happy with the sketch, I went ahead and outlined them using the Kelly Creates 03 or 05 Black fineliner. Erase any pencil lines that are visible when you’re finished outlining.
From here you can illustrate them with your own seasonal florals as I’ve done below, or you can incorporate real ones, fresh or dried.
Since I was at our northern Canadian cabin while creating this, I gathered some foliage and purple blooms of wild asters.
I added the quote with the Kelly Creates Fine Black brush pen from the Deluxe Lettering Kit.
I used wildflowers I picked with my grand daughters to photograph this project with their sweet ‘little hands.’ Drying the flowers and leaves would be perfect to create a pretty card or note. Simply pressing them in the middle pages of a heavy book for a week would work.
Here is a free printable template of the vases for you to download and practice illustrating. Click HERE to download or click the image below.
I hope you have fun getting creative and would love to see if you create your own botanical vases. Tag me @diamondandwillow and #kellycreates if you use this tutorial and share online.
