Fall is finally here, and I am not even a little mad about it! As you know, Fall is my favorite season. I love all of the beautiful colors and all the pumpkin tastes and smells. I love warm days and cool nights. Even though this year Fall may look a little different, embrace the change and enjoy all that the season has to offer.  The earth is about to show us how beautiful it can be to let things go.  Take some time to relax, let go, and make some creative time for yourself.

Today I am sharing a fun and easy technique for absolutely everyone! Sometimes we focus on hand lettering and calligraphy, but this tutorial is a bit different because we are designing with Kelly’s Fineliners and the Bullet Tip Pen sets… and drawing LINES! We can all draw lines… right? So settle in, and give this easy tutorial a try just for fun!

I also used an electronic cutting machine (Silhouette) to cut out the words that I am using in my projects. Don’t worry if you don’t have this. You can use a craft knife and cutting mat to cut them out.  We have included both the SVG files for machines and a PDF to print and cut with a craft knife. Easy peasy.

First, decide on the word you would like to cut. I cut the word “Falling” because, you know… I am about all things FALL. Decide if you want to cut it from cardstock or patterned paper. If you choose patterned paper, make sure that it is a subtle pattern, so it doesn’t distract from the line work we are going to create. I cut it out of both pattern and solid cardstock. I will show the different ways I used both.

STEP 1: Cut the word of your choice.

I used the Silhouette Cameo to cut the SVG files. (You can cut with the template and craft knife). Follow the instructions from your manual for your machine for exact cutting instructions. Take your paper off the mat, and let’s create! I kept some of the letter centers to use on one my projects. Hang on to them until you decide what you look you like.

Next, cut down the paper to the size you would like. If you’re making a card, I cut mine to 4” x 6” so I could layer it on a 5” x 7” card. Also, cut a piece of white cardstock to 4” x 6” to draw your lines.

STEP 2: Draw Lines

Pick some of the pens from the Kelly Creates Fineliner Pen set to draw lines. I pulled colors that matched my papers and theme. I also found I got really good results with Kelly Creates Multicolor Bullet Tip Pen Set as well. So many pretty colour choices! You can get thicker lines, or use them vertically on the tips to get fine lines.

Using the ruler from the Kelly Creates Deluxe Lettering Kit, start to draw lines horizontally on the white paper where the letters will fall. I measured to see where the letters started with the same ruler. Continue to draw lines down the paper, until it fills the letters. This is where you can be creative! Change the color, the thickness or the widths between lines to get various looks. Play around with your lines to see what you like the best. There is no wrong way to do this!

NOTE: Make sure that you draw enough lines that you fill the letters from top to bottom. Place the cardstock under the cut letters to see if you have enough lines.

STEP 3: Now, let’s build our card!

I flipped the cut piece over and added foam adhesive dots to give some dimension to my project. I think you will love this look! Place the cut paper over the lined cardstock and adhere.

Next, I picked a patterned paper to use as my card base. I cut this 7” x 10” and scored and folded it in the center to make a 5”x 7” card base. Layer the cut paper and lined paper on the card base and adhere.

Embellish the card as desired.  I love embellishments and just added a few so the focus remains on the 3D word and line work.

I cut a small piece of white cardstock and using the Kelly Creates Nest Bullet tip pen, I hand lettered “ for you” on it to add a more personal touch.

Now that you have one card under your belt, let’s try one with more color! My next project is a birthday card, and I wanted to make it bright!

Start with cutting the word “HAPPY” and follow the same 3 steps as the first project.

I chose a ‘rainbow’ of Kelly Creates pen colors and drew lines on the cardstock in the rainbow order ROYGBIV. I varied some of the line widths on this one. Check out the green lines.

Then, add the foam adhesive dots and assemble the card in the same steps.

After the card is assembled, add some embellishments!

Are you having fun drawing lines yet?  OK, let’s try a few other techniques for the bonus round!

To make a Halloween card, I used Kelly Creates Tracing Paper to change things up and used the Kelly Creates Black Fineliner 05 to draw lines on the Tracing Paper to make spider webs! I cut out the word BOO and made the cutest card!

Layer the card and vellum on orange Bazzill cardstock. (See shopping link below)

I lettered “to you” with my Kelly Creates Sunset Bullet Tip pen on a tiny banner tag. Finish the card with embellishments for a fun Halloween card!

OK… last one. I just want to show one more project to explain a different way to use this technique.  Here is the same cut file from the first project on a scrapbook layout.

And instead of all horizontal lines, I changed the direction and spacing of the lines to create a plaid pattern.

I hope that you try this line drawing technique on your projects! Be sure to post what you create! I can’t wait to see what you come up with. Tag #kellycreates when posting online so we can find your work.

love it that I’m learning how to write sayings and don’t have to rely on a stamp and the only size it’s in to use the saying. thanks Kelly
