I am so grateful for these amazing artists who share their creativity with lettering tutorials every month. Stephanie of @simplystephlettering has started Grad school, so I will be replacing her work with guest lettering artists to showcase their wonderful skills and inspirational ideas.
Today, Bonnie has a really cool hand lettering project with a gorgeous colour palette that can be used in a number of ways…. as a home decor piece, a card, or in a planner or bullet journal. Take a look….
Kelly Creates Supplies: Dream Pens, Multicolor Small Brush pens, Black Fineliners, Creative Journal, Deluxe Lettering Kit (Pencil and eraser)
In the centre of a page inside the Kelly Creates Pink Creative Journal “Harmony”, I drew a circle with a Black 08 Fineliner. TIP: You can use a bowl or other circular object as your template to trace around.
I pencilled in some random overlapping waves, nothing too fancy or neat as the lines will be erased anyways.
With the 01 Black Finliner, I carefully outlined the waves and then erased the pencil lines. Don’t worry if your lines are a little wobbly because when the colouring and patterns are finished, you won’t notice them at all.
Using a variety of Dream Pens and Multicolor Small Brush Pens, I coloured in the waves with various stripes of blue. Just watch and be aware of any waves that may layer behind another, so you can continue that stripe of colour there as well.
From here I used the Kelly Creates Black Fineliner to add black outlines to each of the blue stripes and then drew an assortment of patterns within the stripes, such as half circles, spiral, scallops, zig zags and also more straight lines.
For the words, I roughly pencil sketched in my quote to help with spacing before committing to the Turquoise Dream Pen.
After I have lettered it with my desired colour, I erased the messy pencil strokes and drew black shadow lines directly on, and to the right and underneath of each letter with a 01 Black Fineliner.
With the Sky blue Dream Pen, I added a second shadow that did not touch the letters. This gives even more dimension to the lettering.
Now you can make your own waves, perhaps for a monthly cover page, a vacation spread, a card or a framed home decor piece.
After spending some time in Hawaii last month, I know I will use Bonnie’s design to make some waves in my own journal too!
