Meagan Guild (@theillustratedplanner) always has wonderful weekly layouts in her planner, and today she is sharing how she created energy and interest in her design with a cool geometric illustration.

One of the most valuable pages in my planner is my weekly layout. Here is where I keep track of events, daily “to do’s”, the weather, and other things I like to record, such as my sleep, steps, or even meal plan. This layout is one I like to use when I don’t have a huge amount of time to illustrate and want to keep things relatively simple

A quick way to add some excitement to a layout is with easy geometric patterns and a bright color pattern! You can use any color palette you choose; this week I was feeling vibrant, warm colors. In my opinion, there’s nothing more exciting about planning than opening your journal to an inviting and exciting layout!

Step 1.

Before we begin, keep in mind that not all dotted journals are the same and the spacing between dots might be different. Here I’m using a Kelly Creates Creative Journal so my dot guide I have included in the image might be different for you.

First, count down 11 dots to create our “banner” section and draw a straight line across both pages using a ruler and a Kelly Creates Fineliner Size 03. Following this, count down 10 dots and draw another line across. Finally, count down another 10 dots and draw a line again.

On the second page, separate the bottom right hand side into two sections by counting over 14 dots and drawing a small line down. (This will be the Saturday and Sunday sections)

Step 2

Create the squares for where you will write the date by drawing a 3 x 3 dot square in the top left corner. On the right side, create three rectangles that are sized 4 x 2 dots. These rectangular boxes will become little mini-trackers for each day.

To make your page look cleaner and more finished, continue to use the Kelly Creates Fineliner 03 to add a border around the outside of the page.

Now that the layout for the week has been drawn, you can start the illustration process! I actually tested out multiple Metallic Jewel Bullet Tip Pen colors before I decided on the silver. I love all the colors so it was a difficult choice!

My favorite part about creating triangle patterns is that it’s so easy to design an intricate looking pattern by just drawing…triangles!

Begin by drawing a triangle in the top left corner, and continue to draw interlocking triangles all around the space. As you fill the space, try out different sizes and different angled triangles.

Before you know it, the whole banner will be filled with a geometric and crystal-like pattern!

Step 4.

For this project, choose 3-4 Dream Pen markers in a similar color family. I decided to go with pinks and oranges, but it’s really up to your personal preferences. The colors shown here are Blossom, Coral, and Sunset from Set 1, and Petal from Set 2. Begin coloring in the triangles by alternating between the colors you have chosen. To create a cohesive color pattern, try not to have any triangles with the same color sharing a side (but sharing a point is totally fine!).

Quick secret, if you color outside the lines of the triangle…that’s ok! The silver metallic of the Bullet Tip Pens will hide the marker. Just another reason to love these products even more.

Step 5.

Once the whole banner has been colored, fill in the date boxes and trackers. For the dates, I used the Blossom Dream Pen. For the trackers, I used the Coral, Sunset, and Petal Dream Pens. Then write in the dates by using the same Metallic Jewel Bullet Tip Pen in silver.

Step 6.

To finish, write the first letter of the day of the week in the lettering style of your choice. I decided to keep with the geometric theme and created some funky capital letters using the Kelly Creates Fineliner 01.

I am tracking the weather, my daily steps, and how many hours of sleep I got the night before.
