Rachel Doan ( @rachelbujo ) has designed this stunning November cover page for her creative journal using the new Kelly Creates stamp sets.
Stamps are a quick and easy way to decorate and customize a cover page for beginners, or for those who just are short on time to draw. In this tutorial, I will be showing you how to decorate a November cover page using Kelly Creates’ stamp sets. With a few and simple steps, you will learn how to utilize stamps effectively to create an eye catching cover page.

- Kelly Creates Black Fineliners set
- Kelly Creates 3-Pack Black Brush Pen set
- Kelly Creates Aqua Brush pens
- Kelly Creates Floral Stamp set
- Kelly Creates Bouncy Celebration Stamp set
- Kelly Creates Bouncy Alphabet Stamp set
- A journal (the Kelly Creates “Harmony” or “Clarity” Creative Journals)
- black ink pad
- stamping block
Step 1: For my cover page, I am using the Floral Stamp set from the Kelly Creates stamp collection. In the absence of an ink pad, feel free to use a marker to colour the stamp surface but stamp quickly before the ink dries. You can mark the border lines where you are stamping with a pencil or you can just align the stamp along the dot grid.
Step 2: After stamping the floral borders, I added colour with the Kelly Creates Aqua Brushes to embellish the cover page. Feel free to experiment and customize with the colours of your choosing.
Step 3: To create more depth and dimension with the flowers, add a few layers of colour. A tip for adding lighter colors is to dilute them by dipping the Aqua Brush pens in water. You can also scribble the colours onto a plastic palette (even a plastic sandwich baggie) and then pick them up with a fine paintbrush that is loaded with water for a watercolor effect. Don’t worry about coloring it perfectly because you can fix small mistakes in the next step with a brush pen and a fineliner.
Step 4: After you finish colouring, if your stamped images are light, use the Kelly Creates Fine Black Brush pen and Black Fineliners to trace over the flowers. Using the Black Fineliners to draw in the smaller details inside the flowers will make them pop.
Step 5: Add calligraphy using the Kelly Creates Bouncy Celebration and Bouncy Alphabet stamp sets. For my cover page, I stamped the phrase “Hello November”, but feel free to change the month name. You can stamp in any colour or stamp with a very light ink and then trace over with your Multicolor Small Brush tip pens.
With just a few steps, you can create a stunning cover page with beautiful stamps and colours. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and find it useful for your journal.
Thank you Rachel! The watercolour florals on this cover page you created are breathtaking!
