Meet Nicole McLaren, Founder & CEO of Raven Reads

Nicole is the recipient of Startup Canada’s National Indigenous Business of the Year (2018) and the BC Achievement Foundation’s Indigenous Business of the Year (2020). She was also a finalist in the Small Business BC’s Premier’s People’s Award (2021) and the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade’s Business Resilience Regional Export Plan of the Year (2020).
Through the incredible success of Raven Reads, Nicole has invested over $400,000 back into the Indigenous economy, and donated over $2,000 to literacy programs for Indigenous children and youth. She is the Founder and Chair of the Indigenous Women’s Business Network, an organization that she created to provide coaching and mentoring to other Indigenous women business owners.
Nicole holds two bachelor’s degrees from the University of Saskatchewan, and will complete her Masters of Business Administration in 2023 from the University of Illinois’ Gies School of Business. She currently resides in Logan Lake, BC with her husband and two young children.
Raven Reads, based in Kamloops, BC, Canada, is a rapidly growing subscription box service focused on authentic and thoughtfully curated content and educational materials created by Indigenous Peoples. Along with hand-crafting soaps, Joella has worked to make Yukon Soap Company a community-building, language-learning, earth-connecting hub in the heart of the Yukon—the small town of Mayo.

Meet Anong Beam, Founder of Beam Paints

Beam Paints is the result of a multi-generational love of pigment, paint, colour, and innovation. I was raised by my artist parents, Carl Beam and Ann Beam, and was taught from a young age how to harvest hematite pigment in the LaCloche mountain range near our home in M’Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island.
Beam Paints draws on my early educations in Indigenous pigment and expands it to encompass all paint traditions. A focus on high quality pigment content creates sublime artist materials, with plastic free packaging.
Lightfast pigments, tree sap, gum arabic, and Manitoulin honey, blend together to create a handmade saturated colour that is a joy to paint with. From thick stripes to fine washes and details, quality is evident in every stroke.
Our watercolours are shaped into paintstones, our version of a half-pan, before being wrapped in beeswaxed canvas. Our pans are packaged in slices of cedar and birch offcuts from an Indigenous sustainable lumber operation.
Meet Destiny Seymour, Owner of Indigo Arrows

Destiny Seymour is an Anishinaabe interior designer based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She graduated with her master’s degree in Interior Design from the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. She worked at local architecture firm in Winnipeg for over 10 years as their interior designer before starting her own design business in 2016.
Destiny started designing artisan textiles for interiors that respectfully reflects local Manitoban Indigenous peoples and their history after struggling to find materials that she could incorporate into design projects.
Her company, Indigo Arrows, now offers a range of table linens, pillows, and blankets that showcase patterns from local Indigenous pottery and bone tools that date from 400 to over 3000 years old. These patterns are picking up where her ancestors left off.
Destiny has an Indigenous led design studio. Her design practice takes a critical look at the representation of Indigenous cultures within spaces. Her design mission is to respectfully reflect local Indigenous cultures & identity within architectural forms, interior spaces, furniture, and textiles. This design process acknowledges community engagement, inclusiveness, and collaboration when creating new works.

And to see them take their talents and heritage and skills and make something that’s truly phenomenal, is incredible .I recently finished Reservation Dogs (hilarious and moving at the same time) and it has awakened in me a renewed interest in the indigenous cultures, especially in the Pacific Northwest. If I was to pick from any one of these talented entrepreneurs, it would be the Raven Box so I can learn more about their culture. Thank you Kelly for showcasing these powerful and wise women to us. I looked up each of their websites and IG pages and was in amaze at all of the talent and creativity that goes into what they are doing! I think my favorite is Beam Paints. I love the idea that there is not plastic used in the paint pallets and that the making of pigments has been passed from one generation to the next! How exciting that her son even helps her.

However, I am of a very senior age and have decided learn a new art skill that I always wanted to learn. That is watercolor! There are so many options for watercolor paint and supplies to choose from. I would absolutely love to sample these watercolors. They look so awesome.
