This year I decided to work on my sketching and watercolour skills. Every morning (well, almost every morning), I sit down first thing with my sketchbook. Actually, a good friend of mine recommended I do this when I complained last year of not having enough time for creative exploration… (Thanks Crystal!). These “morning meditations” have been such an incredible learning experience for me.
I decided to share these morning sketches and paintings in my Instagram & Facebook Stories. Doing so has been a scary but rewarding experience. I didn’t realize my morning ‘playtime’ would result in me teaching sketching and watercolour online classes. I love it!
One of my sketches was inspired by the Coco Chanel quote “Beauty begins…” and a messy bun drawing I found online (artist unknown). The response I received after I shared the photo above was amazing! So many of you reached out me. I decided to do a watercolour version the next day. The original is done with the Kelly Creates Black Fineliners, and in the coloured version I used my Kelly Creates Watercolor Inks.
During the Christmas ‘Covid’ season, I was wondering how to ‘give back’ to all of you and decided to create a free printable of my ‘Beauty Begins’ sketch. (I will not be offering the black and white version because it is very similar to the one I found online as inspiration and don’t want to infringe copyright).

December 22, 2020 at 9:03 am (3 years ago)HI Arlene, I highly recommend setting aside half an hour each morning or some time during the day with your sketchbook. Sometimes I have the ideas, and sometimes I look at pictures online…google and find inspiration that way. Be careful about ‘copying’ and copyright though.
