Watercolour Playtime

A funny thing happened to me on Instagram a couple weeks ago. I was flipping through photos and a short 5 second video was on the Tombow USA feed.  I watched how someone wrote a beautiful ‘hello’, kind of modern calligraphy, with a Dual Brush Pen.  I was enchanted! So I pulled out my set of Dual Brush Pens that I hadn’t been using much, and my love affair with lettering and watercolors began!

The flamingo sketch and watercolour was my first playtime with these markers. I was all about the colouring, adding water, creating blended tones, etc. I was having such FUN.

And the hand lettering love grew, so I purchased two Tombow Fudenosuke Brush pens, a soft tip and a hard tip. If I sketch with these pens in black, I then can use the Dual Brush Pens with water and not have any black bleeding anywhere.

Then a challenge comes around on the Tombow blog: Words of Wisdom. YAY! I love this quote by the Dalai Lama “My Philosophy is Kindness” and I wanted to sketch and colour an image to go with it. So I searched up lotus flower online and found a free clip art image. I used that as my inspiration and practiced drawing the flower with my Fude pen. Then I coloured in the petals with different pink shades of Dual Brush Pens, blended with water and the Blending Brush pen.

I am loving the easy watercolour effects I’m getting with these Dual Brush Pens, and I am now obsessed with hand lettering. Some day soon, these techniques will sneak out of my art journal and onto my scrapbook layouts and cards.
