Hey Lettering Friends! Happy Spring! Are all the flowers in full bloom where you are? We are blooming and enjoying some warmer weather here in Utah.

Today, I want to share a technique that brings whimsical blooms into your lettering. These floral letters are really easy and fun to fill in. With Kelly Creates’ wide variety of pen sets, you can create so much more than brush lettering.

Did you know Kelly Creates has 3 sets of pens that are NOT brush tips? They are the Multicolor Fineliners with a 05 point nib in 10 colours, the Multicolor Bullet tip pens with a 1.0 nib in another 10 different colours, and the Black Fineliners set of 6 pens that have 6 different sizes of nibs are are waterproof as well as fast-drying.

I started with a piece of Kelly Creates grid practice paper and sketched out a word in a serif block style. I always like to start with a sketch of what I want before I commit so I can work through the spacing, etc. The Kelly Creates grid paper is perfect for lettering designs. Choose a lettering style that has weight and dimension, such as block. I chose the word ‘SPRING,’ but how cute would it be to use someone’s name! (If you’re not interested in sketching your letters, I’ve included a free printable template of some words at the end of this post.)

Once you have the letters sketched out and the way you like it, repeat the process, and draw the letters on a piece of Kelly Creates black paper. Be sure to pencil lightly since you ultimately will be erasing these lines. I chose black paper because the Kelly Creates Metallic Jewel Pens really pop on the dark.

Next, start with any color from the Metallic Jewel pens and draw small flowers inside the letters. (Editor’s note: The Metallic Jewel Bullet tip pens are discontinued and can be substituted with the Kelly Creates Jewel Small Brush Pens, as indicated in the shopping list at the end of this post.)

Then add a few small dots in a random pattern. From the set of Kelly Creates Jewel Pens, I used; Ruby, Amethyst, Jade and Bronze for my flowers and dots.

Be sure to fill in the entire letter with flowers in varying sizes and shapes, then go back in and fill in the multicolor dots.

After you have filled the letters, go back with the Silver Metallic Jewel Pen and add centers to each of the flowers. You can also add a few silver dots as well. This will also give a nice shimmer to the letters.

Repeat the process for each letter. Be sure to draw some partial flowers along the inside edges of the letters to create some dimension. Try not to be too consistent with your pattern; it looks better if they are more randomly placed.

Once you have filled them all in, take a step back and make sure there are not any ‘holes’ in the letters that need to be filled. Once you erase the pencil, you should still be able to still see the shape of the letter.

Here is a close up of the letters to give you an idea of what I did.

It’s time to gently erase the pencil lines. Be careful not to press too hard with the eraser because the black paper will show the eraser marks with too much pressure.

Now that you have a floral masterpiece, you can create a card, or add this as a title on a scrapbook layout! I created a greeting card (you know I love me some cards!) and also used this technique on a scrapbook page.

I added just a few embellishments to the card, but the focus of attention is on my floral hand lettering.

This is a great technique to also try on light cardstock. I created the title “MAY 2021” for my scrapbook layout using the same Kelly Creates Metallic Jewel pens. It’s so fun to see how pretty the metallic pens looks on the lighter paper. Another option would be to use Kelly Creates Multicolor Fineliners and Bullet tip pens on white or light paper. Or….a black and white version using the Kelly Creates Black Fineliners would be really cool too!

I added some other embellishments and photos and have a wonderful scrapbook layout with a handmade title!

Now that you have the technique down, try changing up the flowers and colors using various Kelly Creates pen sets. I think I am going to try to use some Fall colors and florals, and maybe venture into Christmas?!? Too soon? Haha, the possibilities are endless on what you can create with these floral block letters, a few pens, and your creativity!
