One of the most popular uses for lettering is home décor projects. Plaques, quotes, cups, cushions…everywhere you look you will see beautiful script.
I recently had the pleasure of working with some Walnut Hollow wood products to create some fun home décor pieces. Using Tombow dual brush pens, I designed a lettered wood sign and some cute wood coasters.
Walnut Hollow has so many gorgeous wood surfaces for lots of crafting possibilities. Of course, as soon as I saw the wood pieces, I thought, “I have to do some brush lettering on them!” Out came my Tombow dual brush pens.
These Basswood Country Round Coasters were easily transformed with watercolor hearts. Watercolor on wood? Why not! First I drew the hearts freehand with the Tombow dual tip pen, and then colored it in. I used my ‘older’ Tombow pens on the wood and not my ‘new’ pens that I reserve for lettering on paper. Althought the wood is smooth, I am very cautious when it comes to preserving my brush tips.
I added water so the pink color would blend, and I was happy to see it doesn’t bleed. I do recommend testing on the reverse side of the wood surface if you’re unsure of applying a medium.
I heated this a bit with a heat gun to so it would dry quickly. Then I used the bullet tip of the Tombow dual brush pen to draw the concentric circles of the wood grain. I really like this subtle tone on tone effect of the wood grain.
Then I sprayed this Beacon Sealer on to keep the colors in place.
My next Walnut Hollow project is this wonderful Basswood Country Plank. This plank is the perfect size for lettering a quote or phrase.
On the reverse side, I sketched out my phrase to see how it would fit.
The red heart is created the same way as the coasters, but when I added water, this time it bled a little. I liked the look of it, but you could prep the surface first to prevent this.
To add the woodgrain rings, I used a white Posca paint pen.
I’m so happy about the way these lettering projects turned out! Walnut Hollow has so many lovely wood surfaces with so many crafting and art possibilities. Wood burning with lettering comes to mind.

January 23, 2017 at 11:09 am (7 years ago)Gorgeous! I picked up a wood box and used it to test different gold pens on it for a gift. Some did bleed. What would you use to prep the wood surface before lettering on it??
I used some Modge Podge on it after, but it wasn’t the glossy one so it looked a little dull. I need to grab a good glossy top coat.
